Introduction
The Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine IGU is located within the second floor of the Old Hospital at Kenyatta National Hospital and has been in existence since 1998. The department is WHO-recognised regional Training Centre which trains Diagnostic Imaging Specialists within Eastern and Central Africa.
The services currently offered are;
- Plain radiography,
- Contrast Media Studies
- Barium and iodinated contrast studies of the gastrointestinal system,
- Intravenous Urography
- Venography
- Ultrasonography.
- General abdomen and organ specific imaging
- Regional and musculoskeletal
- Cranial
- Obstetric and gynaecological
- Endocavitary both gynaecological and prostate imaging
- Small parts and Doppler vascular studies
Equipment and Infrastructure
The IGU is located on the second floor of the Old Hospital at Kenyatta National Hospital.
The key infrastructure includes the following;
- Modern furnished spacious Reception
- Waiting room
- Fluoroscopy room
- Three Ultrasound rooms
- General Radiography room
- Dark room.
The major Equipment in place are;
- General Purpose X-ray unit
- Three Ultrasound machines
- Automatic Film Processor
It is envisaged that it will grow to offer imaging in the following areas;
- Remote Control Fluoroscopy
- Multi-detector Computerised Tomography
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging
- Radionuclide Imaging
- Angiography and Interventional Imaging
- Digital Mammography
- Digital/ Computed Radiography
- Radiation Monitoring Services
Human resources are drawn mainly from the departmental staff and consist of
- Consultant Radiologists
- Radiographers
- Physicists
