COURSE ABSTRACT:

The tourism sector is one of the most important economic sectors in Kenya both in terms of income generation and employment. However the industry is facing a major challenge in form of emerging environmental disasters which can cause loss of lives and businesses. Besides natural disasters, anthropogenic disasters like terrorism and wanton destruction of public and private property are major threats to the future development of the tourism industry. Many business enterprises in the tourism sector require a good capacity for disaster management in order to formulate appropriate mechanisms for early warning, prevention and control disaster related hazards and risks. Exposure to both preventive and curative measures is necessary for effectively management of disasters. Impacts of physical disasters, The overall aim of the short course is to familiarize and equip business practioners in the tourism sector with vital skills for comprehensive disaster management both within the business environment and other areas of operation.

COURSE OUTLINE:

    * An overview of the tourism sector.
    * Introduction to environmental disasters in the tourism sector, typology of hazards and risks in the tourism sector.
    * Natural disasters in the tourism sector; earthquakes and tsunamis, landslides, floods and droughts.
    * Anthropogenic hazards including tourism accidents, artificial fires, theft and destruction of tourism infrastructure, hijacking and terrorism. pollution and water contamination, biological, chemical and related disasters, disasters in water sporting.
    * Political disasters and the tourism industry; The Hague Convention on crimes against common heritage of humanity; disaster and sacred sites; coups and civil strife.
    * Impacts of natural and anthropogenic disasters.
    * Disaster management procedures, site assessment, hazard analysis, risk assessment, disaster early warning mechanisms, emergency preparedness and response, evacuation procedures, risk minimization, calculating the risk index, insurance and compensation.
    * Practicals.
