COURSE ABSTRACT:

Course is designed to expose participants to the latest advances in contingency planning, with particular attention to the challenges of emergency/disaster management in Africa to-day. We will examine the dominant principles, practices and contexts of contingency planning around the world, from an Africa-oriented SWOT perspective.

    * Vulnerability Analysis, Risk Analysis and Gap Identification
    * Contingency Planning Principles, Tools and Resources
    * The Contingency Planning Process as Praxis
    * Contingency Plan Validation, Implementation and   Evaluation Modalities
    * Summing up: Overview of lessons learnt and recommendations for the future.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

The target clients will be public and private sector organizations, as well as NGOs and community organizations. More specifically, the target audience will be decision-making middle-level and top-level executives of these organizations, particularly those whose job descriptions or mandates include preparing for and dealing effectively with contingent events which may impact upon the safety and security of human, material and other resources within establishments or community and other social settings. To put it in other words, we will be most interested in organizations, executives and leaders with an interest in planning to prevent, mitigate, respond to or recover from contingent (i.e. hard-to-anticipated or predict) events -- natural and/or human-caused (including technological) - and their consequences.
