COURSE ABSTRACT:
It is generally an accepted fact that the fight against HIV/AIDS should lean more towards preventive rather than curative approaches. And even when it comes to dealing with infected persons, the management should be biased towards home and community care rather than conventional care that involve long periods of hospitalization. Some of the key elements in the fight against HIV/AIDS are the sensitization of the community, removing of the stigma and proper counselling to the persons infected with HIV/AIDS.
Communication is therefore necessary in the fight against HIV/AIDS in several ways: understanding the technical and scientific terms used by professionals dealing with HIV/AIDS; simplifying the technical terms to a level that will be better understood by the community during the sensitization; providing sensitive language that will help during the counselling of infected persons (sensitivity on gender, race, age, sex, religion, sexuality etc) ; providing them with interpersonal and public speaking skills necessary in interacting with persons, groups, families and communities.
